The Niagara Falls Police Department is investigating a number of purse thefts in recent weeks. The incidents have occurred citywide involving women returning home from shopping at businesses both in Niagara Falls and the Town of Niagara.

State Sen. George Maziarz, R-C, Newfane, introduced legislation (S.3306) on Feb. 16 to improve the operations of the Child and Adult Protective Services systems in order to prevent tragedies like the murder of 23-year old North Collins resident Laura Cummings. The measure is dubbed "Laura Cummings' Law" in her memory.

The sixth season of NBC's top-rated summer series, "America's Got Talent," will tape shows in front of a live audience in cities across the country starting in Seattle on March 2 and 3. After Seattle, the talent competition series will travel to Los Angeles (March 9-10), Minneapolis (March 23-24), New York (March 31-April 1), Atlanta (April 12-14) and Houston (April 19-20).

Niagara University announces John Wang, Ph.D., an assistant professor of physics at NU, has been selected as a scholar by the prestigious Kavli Institute of Theoretical Physics at the University of California at Santa Barbara. The institute is one of the major think tanks for theoretical physics in the world. Approximately eight scholar awards are given out each year.

A favorite star from "High School Musical" will be joined by six multitalented performers in a new music and dance-driven comedy pilot, "Madison High" (working title). The series pilot introduces a troupe of theater students led by the melodramatic drama teacher Ms. Darbus, a beloved character from the cultural sensation "High School Musical." Production on the pilot begins in March in consideration for a Disney Channel series to premiere in early 2012.

For the past several years Firth's Jewelers of Niagara Falls has been providing track champions of Ransomville Speedway with awards at the Big R's season ending banquet. Champion's watches engraved with "Ransomville Speedway Champion" and the year are awarded to the five titlists, while their significant others are recognized with a racer's bracelet. Miss Ransomville also receives a bracelet as a token of the speedway's appreciation.

On April 2, roughly 170 participants ages 6-18 ranging from white to the prestigious black belt will be competing for their chance to win in the Presti Karate Kid's Championships. This year's fundraising will benefit Child Advocacy, Community Missions and Kick Start Kids. Presti Karate has donated more than $49,000 over the years to such local children's programs.
