The following incidents occurred from Sept. 16 to 22, as reported by the Grand Island Fire Co. A total of 24 calls were answered by the department during this period. The GIFC has now responded to 1,046 calls so far this year.

State Sen. Mark Grisanti, who represents the Island in the New York State Senate, recently visited Grand Island Memorial Library. Lynn Alan Konovitz, director, said Grisanti gave libraries like Grand Island's extra funding aid, which Memorial Library used for computer hardware.

With the Grand Island school year well underway, and with the capital project expanding the high school terrain a few feet further every day, the high school building foundations formed in the past are being restructured in the present with the intent to revolutionize the Island's future. In effort to preserve today's customs for the future, the Grand Island High School DECA business and marketing organization has coined a time capsule project to embody the atmosphere of the current school and community's culture.

For the past 18 years, Aurora House, located in Lockport and operated by Community Missions, has worked to transform the lives of youth diagnosed as severely emotionally disturbed. Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo announced Thursday the state and the City of Niagara Falls will partner to launch the Downtown Niagara Falls Development Challenge, a major competition to select a team of world-class designers, developers and operators to envision and develop signature projects in the downtown area that will attract significant private sector investment and accelerate the revitalization of Niagara Falls. The goal of the competition is to transform downtown Niagara Falls into the ultimate tourist destination to attract and retain visitors from around the world, by building and enhancing the amenities and attractions available in the area.

Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman and Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli today announced the arrest of Steven C. Richards, the Town of Niagara supervisor, for "engaging in an ongoing scheme to steal town property and use town employees and equipment for his own personal gain." The Joint Task Force on Public Integrity is a cooperative effort between Schneiderman's and DiNapoli's offices to "root out public corruption and maximize the resources of each office."

The Buffalo Sabres today announced veteran broadcaster Mike Robitaille, who has been a mainstay on Sabres broadcasts for more than three decades, will retire following the 2013-14 season. The team also announced the addition of former Sabres winger Brad May to the Sabres broadcast team, beginning this season, as an analyst and commentator.
