The New York Power Authority will celebrate Energy Awareness Month this October at its admission-free Power Vista, the visitors center for the Niagara Hydroelectric Power Plant, with a series of fun and educational events. The month starts with three energy programs on Saturdays Oct. 5, 12 and 19. NYPA wraps up the month with a "Spooktacular" event on Saturday, Oct. 26.

Families can enjoy a variety of presentations, movies and activities each Saturday. The following is a list of the free energy awareness events.

Oct. 5 - Energy Efficiency. Representatives from New York State Energy Research and Development Agency will be on hand to help guests prepare their homes for winter with simple, energy-saving strategies. Learn about alternative energy options and the benefits of a free or low-cost energy assessment through NYSERDA's Home Performance Program, featuring information on the Energy Star products and New York's Green Jobs program. This event takes place at 1 p.m. in the Power Vista classroom on the lower level.

Oct. 12 - Solar Energy. Learn about clean energy technologies from a representative from Solar Liberty, who will also talk about the Power Vista's new solar exhibit. Guests will hear from a Niagara Falls resident who recently converted to solar power and will discuss the benefits and projected savings of going green.

Oct. 19 - Enjoy "Timon and Pumbaa" and "Louie the Lightning Bug" - two movies that teach families about electrical safety. That's followed by a "Basics of Electricity" hair-raising show.

Oct. 26 - Halloween "Spooktacular." Dress up in your Halloween best and join the fun. This event features games, treats, crafts, a haunted house, a costume contest and hayrides. Visitors can also enjoy free rides on the Niagara Scenic Trolley between the Gorge Discovery Center and the Power Vista throughout the "Spooktacular" and receive free child safety identification cards.

In addition to Energy Awareness Month events, guests are invited to enjoy the Power Vista's attractions, which include displays and interactive exhibits relating to the production of electricity, energy efficiency and the area's history, as well as offering unique views from the observation deck 350 feet above the Niagara River Gorge. Parking and admission at the Power Vista are always free.
