After a national search, the board of directors at the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens announced Mark Mortenson will be appointed as the new president and CEO. Mortenson will step into the role following the retirement of David Swarts in March. Swarts will be retiring after 12 years with the organization.

Gov. Kathy Hochul has announced 29 new #VaxForKids pop-up vaccination sites to increase vaccination rates among children and adolescents. The new sites support the state's goal of ensuring New York children 5 years and older get vaccinated and keep up with all recommended coronavirus vaccine doses, including the booster.

The Erie County Department of Health is reminding Erie County residents they can seek free coronavirus testing. ECDOH has updated its procedures to make rapid (ID Now) testing available to any resident on request. Previously, rapid testing was only available from ECDOH for individuals with COVID-19 symptoms or those with a known exposure.

Hilbert College was awarded a $523,625 grant from The Mother Cabrini Health Foundation. This grant has surpassed last year's grant from the foundation ($500,000), and is the largest foundation grant in Hilbert's history.

Tops Friendly Markets raised $13,365 as a result of its gingerbread house campaign for Oishei Children's Hospital. The campaign, which kicked off in early November, welcomed families to purchase a gingerbread house kit at locations throughout the region, with a portion of the proceeds being donated back to the hospital. The kits came complete with gingerbread to build a house, plus sweet candy decorations and icing.

Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn on Monday announced a 17-year-old male from Buffalo was arraigned before Youth Part Justice Kelly Brinkworth on one count of attempted murder in the second degree (class "B" violent felony), one count of criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree (class "C" violent felony) and one count of assault in the second degree (class "D" felony).

Congressman Brian Higgins is urging all eligible Western New Yorkers to join more than 10 million American households that have signed up for the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP), the nation's largest broadband affordability program. Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the successful launch of mobile sports wagering in New York state, with nearly $2 billion in wagers taken during the first 30 days of operation. Her team said, "This record-breaking success, more than any other state has ever reported, will generate more than $70 million in tax revenue for New York state, providing funds to be allocated toward programs that support education, youth sports, and more."

On Monday, New York State Senate Republican Leader Rob Ortt and members of the Senate Republican Conference called for an end to what they called "unconstitutional mandates promulgated by Gov. Kathy Hochul and her Department of Health." The Republicans announced they would force a vote on the New York Senate floor to end the mandates.

Empire State Wrestling returns to Niagara Falls for its first event of 2022 with "Spring Breakdown" on Saturday, March 5, at the Frontier Fire Hall, 2176 Liberty Drive, Niagara Falls. This will be the second consecutive event held at Frontier by ESW.
