Niagara County: Guilty verdict in murder case

Niagara County District Attorney Brian D. Seaman announced a Niagara County jury returned a guilty verdict in the murder case against Shaquan Gibson, age 49, of Niagara Falls this morning.

Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn announced 36-year-old Salvatore S. Rizzo of Hamburg was sentenced this morning before Erie County Court Judge James Bargnesi to 20 years to life in prison.

Today's national average price for a gallon of gasoline is $3.49, down 6 cents from last Monday. One year ago, the price was $3.76. The New York state average is $3.74, down 4 cents from a week ago. A year ago, the NYS average was $3.81.

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced State Police and local law enforcement will be out in force through Halloween in order to crack down on impaired and reckless driving. The enforcement period begins Friday, Oct. 27, and runs through Tuesday, Oct. 31. It is funded by the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee.

Niagara County Legislator Randy Bradt announced registration is now open for the county's next household hazardous waste (HHW) collection event, which will be held Saturday, Nov. 4, in North Tonawanda. The county will also be offering paper shredding. The event is open to all Niagara County residents, but people must register in advance.

Hanlon announced the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles has begun sending out driver's license suspension notices to the 95,000 motorists who renewed their license between March 1, 2020, and Aug. 31, 2021, by self-certifying their vision, but have failed to submit the results.
