DEC announces 2020 'I BIRD NY' challenges

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos recently announced the start of the 2020 "I BIRD NY" challenges for beginner and experienced birders. The program was launched by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, in 2017, to build on the state's efforts to increase access to New York's vast natural resources and promote low-cost opportunities to explore the great outdoors and connect with nature.
Cuomo signs legislation extending deadline to submit absentee ballots to day of election

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on Sunday signed legislation (S.8130-D/A.10516-A) extending the deadline to submit absentee ballots until the day of the election. To be counted, primary ballots must be postmarked by June 23. The governor previously issued executive orders allowing all New Yorkers to vote absentee in the June 23 primary elections and ensuring every New Yorker registered to vote receives a postage-paid absentee ballot application in the mail.

On Fridays, June 5-19, the Herb and Aaron Siegel Foundation will spearhead an effort to deliver meals across the East Side of Buffalo in order to address food insecurity during the COVID-19 pandemic. With the support of partners Rich Products, Back to Basics Outreach Ministries, Citizen Action of New York, Foundation for Jewish Philanthropies, Jewish Family Services and the Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy, the Siegel Foundation will donate 1,000 meals on each of those days to families during these difficult times.

Census Bureau to deliver 2020 census questionnaires in most upstate counties

The U.S. Census Bureau, in coordination with federal, state and local health officials, will begin to drop off 2020 census questionnaire packets at front doors of households in most upstate New York counties starting Wednesday, May 27. This is done in areas where the majority of households do not receive mail at their physical address. The Census Bureau began hand-delivering census materials on March 15, but suspended all fieldwork for this operation on March 18 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Carnegie Art Center (CAC) announced the Carnegie Art Festival: A Virtual Art Experience as an alternative to in-person art festivals this summer. The virtual festival will be a website that will be released to the public on July 1 and will be on view until Aug. 1. The CAC is currently seeking artists and craftspeople to apply to participate in the virtual festival. Deadline to submit artwork is Saturday, May 30.
