Depression is a common problem among older adults, but is not a normal part of aging. Mental illness can be difficult to discuss and is no laughing matter. Often the best way to learn about a hard topic is through laughter.

The Council for Older Adults in Niagara County (COA) and Retired Seniors Volunteer Corp (RSVP) are presenting a screening of the uplifting, lighthearted comedy, “POMS,” as part of their free movie day series. This upcoming event will take place at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, on the campus of Niagara University. The comedy stars Diane Keaton as a woman who moves into a retirement home for the end of her life, but realizes the power of community and friendship.

This comedy will offer participants a way to learn about this serious health issue facing many older adults. Danielle Conlan, community education coordinator for the Mental Health Association in Niagara County, will also be on hand to lead a discussion on depression in the elderly.

The event takes place in a theater-style classroom: Dunleavy Hall Room 127. It is in partnership with the communication studies department.

Admission is free, but registration is required. Call the COA at 716-285-8224, ext. 215 for registration or more information.

The Council for Older Adults is made up of representatives from various senior clubs and groups and individual members from across Niagara County. The COA offers many activities to help older adults remain active, healthy and independent. The COA is funded by the Niagara County Office for the Aging and is one of many HANCI programs.
