NCCC to host 23rd annual Tech Wars

Niagara County Community College will host the 23rd annual Tech Wars competition from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8. This day boasts more than 700 competitors from over 20 middle and high schools in 20-plus categories. The half-day event consists of robotic competitions, seismic building design, bridge design, parametric modeling and architectural design, among other specialties.
Free rabies vaccination clinic scheduled in north Buffalo on Jan. 29

Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz and Commissioner of Health Dr. Gale Burstein recently announced the date for a free mid-winter rabies vaccination clinic. The Erie County Department of Health has scheduled this event for 3-7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, at the North Buffalo Community Center, located at 203 Sanders Road, off Colvin Boulevard in north Buffalo.

The New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports (NYS OASAS) announced the launch of a new media campaign reminding people of the warning signs of addiction and overdoses, and that addiction can happen to anyone. It is designed to reach people traveling for the holidays and will run through the end of December. The campaign is partially funded with money awarded to New York State under the federal state opioid response grant.

Higgins: $1 million-plus federal AmeriCorps grant for Mission:Ignite

Congressman Brian Higgins on Monday announced Mission:Ignite was awarded a three-year $1,021,122 federal grant to oversee a program that engages AmeriCorps members in expanding science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills among area youth. Mission:Ignite will match the grant with $449,000, while an additional $472,000 in AmeriCorps education awards will be available to participating AmeriCorps members, bringing total investment in the program to $1.942 million.

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and the Department of Environmental Conservation announced early-bird savings for online renewals of the 2020 Empire Pass. Customers who keep their existing card and renew online before Jan. 1 will save $15 off a single or multi-season pass. Those users who renew online from Jan. 1 to March 31 will save $10 - and any online card renewals after those dates will receive a $5 discount from the standard price.
