Dresher & Malecki report: 2017 audit finds Lewiston in good financial shape

The Town of Lewiston received favorable news Monday on the status of its overall financial health. It received a preliminary results analysis of fiscal year 2017 ending Dec. 31 by external auditing firm Dresher & Malecki.
Jillian Colucci named 2018 Niagara County Peach Festival chairwoman

Kiwanis Club of Lewiston President Marty Pauly announced Jillian Colucci was named chairwoman of the 2018 Niagara County Peach Festival. Colucci is the first woman to serve in the capacity as chair in the history of the festival, which is celebrating its 61st year Sept. 6-9 at Academy Park on Center Street in Lewiston.

The Niagara Wine Trail will sponsor the annual Niagara USA Wine Festival in Lewiston's Academy Park on Saturday and Sunday, July 28-29. It will be the 10th annual wine festival in Lewiston, promoting the local wineries in Niagara, Orleans and Monroe counties along the Niagara Wine Trail USA. The festival will run from noon to 7 p.m. Saturday and noon until 6 p.m. Sunday.

St. Jude Shrine of Lewiston will hold its annual chicken and rib barbecue dinner from 2-5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 5. The dinner includes cheesy potatoes, pasta salad, tossed salad, dessert, ice cream and beverage. The cost is $15 for adults and $8 for children (6-12 years old). Dine in and takeout available, but tickets are presale only.

Old Fort Niagara will host the largest War of 1812 event in its history on July 28-29. The fort was selected by the War of 1812 Grand Tactical Committee to host its biggest annual event, the War of 1812 Grand Encampment, which attracts hundreds of re-enactors from the U.S. and Canada and will feature U.S. and British land forces, naval vessels, personnel and artillery, Native allies, tactical demonstrations and living-history programming. The event is July 28-29.

The show chronicles the love between wannabe rocker Drew and would-be actress Sherrie. Set to a soundtrack featuring the music of Styx, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister, Steve Perry and Poison, "Rock of Ages" has been called "the jukebox musical that will melt your face off."

The 19th annual Jack Beatty Memorial Cruise and Clambake, held Friday, July 13, continued its tradition of lively entertainment, delicious food and leisurely sailing, all to benefit Niagara Hospice. The event raised a large amount to support the purchase of a new ambulette for Niagara Hospice. A formal check presentation will be in October at Niagara Hospice.

The Lewiston Veterans of Foreign Wars has released its new coin commemorating the future "Circle of Honor." It is the first "challenge" coin the local veterans organization has minted and features the "Circle of Honor" project, which is being undertaken to replace the 1955 memorial at Academy Park with a redesigned and more inclusive monument.

Village of Lewiston Recreation Department offers large assortment of summer programs

The Village of Lewiston Recreation Department's summer programming series recently began, with activities at the recreation center within the Red Brick Municipal Building (145 N. Fourth St.) as well as in Toohey Park (adjacent to the recreation center). The Recreation Department is offering many new programs as well as expanded summer hours. Included are sports, arts, crafts, a toddler program and health and fitness.
