Kenmore Mercy Hospital was awarded an "A" Hospital Safety Grade for the 20th consecutive time by The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit agency that rates hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers on how well they protect patients from medical errors and preventable harm.

The Niagara County Department of Health has rescheduled the public health preparedness access and functional needs exercise initially scheduled for Nov. 7. The exercise will now be conducted from 3-7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30, at Doris W. Jones Family Resource Building, 3001 Ninth St., Niagara Falls.

Niagara County Sheriff Michael J. Filicetti announced the continued multisite expansion of the Niagara County Public Safety Radio Network has been completed. This latest expansion includes tower sites in the towns of Wheatfield, Wilson and Somerset. These sites were selected to enhance coverage areas for the digital radio system, which is utilized by police, fire, EMS and other government agencies in Niagara County.

At 1:52 a.m. Saturday, Niagara County Sheriff's Office patrol attempted to initiate a traffic stop for speed in the 4700 block of Tonawanda Creek Road. A white BMW sedan was observed traveling 91 MPH in the 45 MPH zone. Patrols could not safely catch up to the vehicle and the area was checked.

Lung cancer is the deadliest cancer in the United States. Since lung tissue has no nerves, people often do not experience pain or symptoms until the cancer has reached an advanced stage. However, if lung cancer is diagnosed at an early stage, the cure rate can be as high as 92%. That's why adults who are at high risk for lung cancer should undergo an annual lung cancer screening, which includes a low-dose CT scan.

Senior leadership - President Sonia Clark and Vice President Dave Wedekindt - reported to the board of directors on the organization's highlights and accomplishments for its 50th season. Town of Niagara Active Hose was the scene of a mega meat and basket raffle to benefit Francis Center, a ministry of the Sisters of St. Francis at Stella Niagara. More than $3,000 worth of beef, pork, chicken and fish was up for grabs at the mid-October event, in addition to dozens of themed baskets.
