HAL presents 'The Art of Grieving & the Museum of Memento Mori'

The Historical Association of Lewiston’s next program is titled, “The Art of Grieving & the Museum of Memento Mori.” Amanda Woomer will be the guest speaker at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26, at the Lutheran Church of the Messiah Fellowship Hall, 915 Oneida St., Lewiston.

A press release stated, “Amanda Woomer’s presentation, ‘The Art of Grieving,’ is perfect for this Halloween month. The Traveling Museum of Memento Mori is a small traveling museum featuring almost 100 artifacts from the Victorian mourning period, including post-mortem photos, artwork and jewelry made from human hair, women’s fashion, funeral cards, personal letters, tear catchers, spirit trumpets and more.

“Amanda will help you explore the artifacts as you think about your own mortality, plan for your own death, and face the reality of “memento mori” – someday we must die.”

Woomer is a local historian, anthropologist and former international English teacher born and raised in Buffalo. She is the author of 15 books, including “The Art of Grieving: The Beauty Behind Victorian Mourning Customs,” and the curator of the museum. She won her first award for her writing when she was only 12 years old.

HAL stated, “We will join her as she shares some of the history of the Victorian mourning era as well as the artwork that was created throughout this macabre period. Copies of some of her books will be available for purchase, cash or card.

“This community event is free and open to all but donations are greatly appreciated to help support our museum.
