The Lewiston Council on the Arts and Just Buffalo Literary Center will partner to launch a new regional poetry and music event in Niagara County. The "Lewiston Arts Café" will feature some of the finest poets and musicians in Western New York performing in a 1960s coffee house style setting.

At the recent board meeting of the Niagara River Region Chamber of Commerce, elections were held to fill open positions. Also, the Chamber of Commerce has hired Marlo Briglio of Lewiston to fulfill the part-time administrative assistant position.

On the heels of Gov. Andrew Cuomo's announcement of a multibillion-dollar infrastructure improvement plan for the new York, State Sen. George Maziarz, R-C-Newfane, is strongly urging monies from this initiative be directed to Niagara County to help repair and upgrade the Niagara Falls and Lockport wastewater treatment plants.

The New York Power Authority and Ontario Power Generation ice breakers have been working since midnight this morning to break ice jams along the upper Niagara River. The Niagara River Control Center - part of OPG - issued a flood warning at 9:20 a.m. Ice conditions and water levels are being closely monitored.

Monday night, before family and friends, Daniel R. Gibson was sworn into office in the Village of Lewiston. Mayor Terry Collesano appointed Gibson, a Republican, to assume a portion of Democrat and former Trustee Dennis Brochey's term.

Lockport Community Television will hold its first orientation session of the new year at 7 p.m. Tuesday Jan. 14, at 293 Niagara St., Lockport. In 2014, the Village of Lewiston mayor intends to partner with Alan Hastings to rebuild the Frontier House, work with Bill Paladino on a new retail plaza, come up with a master plan for Academy Park, enliven the upper plateau, fix the drainage problems on Fourth Street, find new grants and keep the tax rate flat.

St. Peter R.C. School students in Lewiston decided to give back to families in need during the holiday season. Instead of exchanging gifts among themselves, the students decided to purchase new clothing and toys and household items for families in the area.
