Northwest Jazz Fest brings top talent to Lewiston

The Northwest Jazz Festival, Lewiston, NY, has become one of the region's premier summer music events, with more than 40,000 visitors annually enjoying over 30 performances, culinary samplings and wine tastings along Center Street. Now in its 17th year, the 2018 edition is slated for Aug. 24-25. Headliners include Veronica Swift and The Benny Green Trio on Friday, and Elio Villafranca (pictured) and the Jass Syncopators on Saturday.

Barker Lions recently sponsored "Lions Night at the Ransomville Races." Lions members from Lockport, Newfane, Wilson, Town of Niagara and Lewiston joined the Barker club. Past District governors Sharon Battaglia, John Hake and Jim Muscoriel joined current District Gov. Jeff Jarvis at the event. To celebrate, trophies were given by the Lions to the winning racers.

"Star Wars Resistance," a new animated series that takes place prior to the events of "The Force Awakens," takes flight with a one-hour premiere Sunday, Oct. 7 (10 p.m. EDT/PDT), on Disney Channel, DisneyNOW and Disney Channel VOD, with subsequent airings on Disney XD.

Year in and year out, the Niagara-Wheatfield High School golf team always seems to find themselves at the top of the Niagara Frontier League standings. Although, Coach Tim Codd lost four key seniors - Nick Peters, Nick Clouden, Jacob Sillett and Peter Buffone - he still has talent at the top in 2018.

Aug. 8, 2018, will be etched in history as the first time the Flame of Hope was carried in Scotland. Guided by New York State Police Staff Inspector Steven Nigrelli, the final leg of the Law Enforcement Torch Run made its way through the streets of Stirling, as the Flame of Hope was carried into the European Special Olympics Games as part of their 40th anniversary opening ceremony.

Adams recognized for academic success

Recently, Alec Adams, of North Tonawanda, was honored by the National Society of High School Scholars. Adams, a senior at Canisius High School, was recognized as one of the top scholars who have demonstrated outstanding leadership, scholarship and community commitment. The announcement was made by NSHSS Founder and Chairman Claes Nobel, a senior member of the family that established the Nobel Prize.

Tonawanda man sentenced for distributing child pornography

U.S. Attorney James P. Kennedy, Jr. announced Monday that Dakkar Young, 23, of Tonawanda, who was convicted of distribution of child pornography, was sentenced to serve 168 months in prison and lifetime supervised release by U.S. District Judge Lawrence J. Vilardo.

USA Niagara Development Corp. (USAN) board of directors met Wednesday and unanimously approved the acquisition of 32 individual properties totaling approximately 11 acres of land in downtown Niagara Falls. The purchase of these properties is made possible through a strategic land acquisition program that is part of Gov. Andrew Cuomo's Buffalo Billion phase two.

After beginning as a modest incentive of $25 million per year in 2004, by 2010 the credit had ballooned to an annual sum of nearly $211 million.
