Niagara Falls: 'Color Your City' Run on Sept. 14

The Niagara Falls Community Development Department (NFCD) and Niagara Falls City School District are hosting the second annual "Color Your City" 5K Run in Hyde Park on Friday, Sept. 14. Runners and walkers of all ages are welcomed to this family-friendly event, which is sponsored by the New York State Health Foundation.

Opening day for the Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons football team was different this year. Before the game, players and coaches gathered around a painted "42" on the field and said a prayer together. The audience also gave the man who donned that 42 a moment of silence. The man who donned 42 was Mike Ziegler, who tragically passed away last winter. To honor their fallen teammate, the Falcons played just like "Ziggy" would have - hard, energetic, passionate and with heart.

Niagara-Wheatfield High School's boys hockey team is known for its storied success on the ice, but now the girls will get their chance to show what they can do. Last week, N-W announced it would join forces with Starpoint High School, as well as North Tonawanda High School, to form a girls hockey team. Lewiston-Porter High School is set to join come the 2019-20 season.

Niagara-Wheatfield girls volleyball coach Brandi Cochran experienced a whirlwind of a season last year. She raised her first sole Niagara Frontier League title, and then ventured off to the Section VI Class A championship for the first time in program history, where they were eventually defeated. Nevertheless, Cochran knows, even though last season was good, 2018 could be better.

Last season, the Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons faced one of the most difficult schedules in Class AA of Section VI, going against state title runner up Lancaster on the road, and sectional runner up Williamsville North at home. This year, the Falcons were classed as A1, and coach Russ Nixon hoped the team could improve off of last season.

Niagara Falls Community Development has extended the voting period for participatory budgeting (PB) 360 to Friday, Sept. 14. Niagara Falls Community Development has allocated $360,000 in its federal funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for public space improvements in three neighborhoods of Niagara Falls: north end, middle Pine and south end. Each neighborhood will receive $120,000 of public space improvements based on how residents vote for the proposed projects.
