Erie County Clerk Michael Kearns is warning Erie County residents of a letter scam where a letter, purporting to be from an employee of the "Erie County Department of Equalization," demands further payment before the end of the month of transfer tax owed to the county upon conveyance of real property. This tax is paid to the county of Erie and state of New York at the time of a real estate closing.

Now a hurricane, Laura is headed to the U.S. Gulf Coast with landfall expected late Wednesday into Thursday. The National Weather Service is predicting a potential Category 3 storm. Thousands of residents have been ordered to evacuate coastal Louisiana and Texas. As in past years, the storm has a high potential to negatively affect coastal refineries, which impacts crude and gasoline inventory levels in the region and beyond.

In an effort to attract more young people to the game of golf, the Niagara County Golf Course on Tuesday announced golfers who purchase a single round of golf can bring one child 17 years of age of younger to play with them for free.
