Helipad at Mount St. Mary's Hospital to complement growing stroke program

"Time is brain" is a statement often used to describe how minutes matter for patients who suffer a stroke. Mount St. Mary's Hospital is moving forward with plans to install a helipad on its campus at 5300 Military Road in Lewiston, which will provide emergency air transport for patients who may require a higher level of care. Currently, emergency ground transport time to Buffalo is 45 minutes; air transport would cut the time to 8 minutes.

Old Fort Niagara to host grand encampment of American Revolution

On Sept. 18-19, the American Revolution returns to Western New York in a big way. Three of the largest 18th century reenactment organizations in North America will converge on Old Fort Niagara in Youngstown for a weekend of large-scale battle reenactments, living history camps and other educational activities. The theme of the event will be "Raid and Retribution" focusing on the Revolution on the New York frontier.

Buffalo Silver Band to perform in Youngstown

At 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, the Buffalo Silver Band will perform the last of its summer concerts at the First Presbyterian Church of Youngstown, 100 Church St. The BSB will play a program of film music scores, jazz arrangements, and lighter musical fare. Admission is free, but donations will be gratefully accepted.
NCSO utilizing new tech

Sheriff Michael Filicetti announced the implementation of a new tool to assist the Niagara County Sheriff's Office in handling mental health calls. In partnership with Niagara County Mental Health, and through the benefit of a grant received by the New York State Office of Mental Health, the NCSO will be deploying iPads to deputies. The tech will be utilized to connect persons in crisis directly with mental health clinicians.
Fisher places 4 priests on administrative leave

The Catholic Diocese of Buffalo released the following information: Bishop Michael W. Fisher has placed four retired priests on administrative leave after being informed that informational documents have been filed with the federal Bankruptcy Court as part of the Buffalo Catholic Diocese's Chapter 11 reorganization proceeding. Specifically, bankruptcy claimants have filed confidential documents containing information about their allegations against the priests.
DiNapoli: Unemployment taxes on employers poised to increase to repay $9B owed to federal government

The historic surge in unemployment claims at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic rapidly depleted the New York State Unemployment Insurance (UI) Trust Fund, resulting in the state borrowing from the federal government to pay claims. State UI tax rates have already risen to the highest level permissible under law in 2021. Unless the state or federal government takes significant action, federal UI tax rates on employers will also increase in 2022 and beyond, according to a report issued by State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli.

Grand Island Post 1346 American Legion is remembering the tragedy of 9/11 this weekend by holding a Patriot Day poppy drive in memory of the lives that were lost 20 years ago. The poppy drive will be a daylong event on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 10 and 11. Donations are being accepted to purchase poppies that will help all local veterans, said Post Judge Advocate Joe Synakowski, who designed and produced this poster.

Niagara County has received $300,000 through the state's consolidated funding application for the county's microenterprise grant program, according to Niagara County Legislature Economic Development Chairman Rich Andres. The program, which is run by the Niagara County Industrial Development Agency, provides resources to support and foster the development of microbusinesses, defined as those with five or few employees.

ESD: Linde to invest $17 million in first North American PEM electrolyzer plant in NYS

Empire State Development (ESD) recently announced Linde, a leading global industrial gases and engineering company with 2020 sales of $27 billion, will build its first North American PEM (proton exchange membrane) electrolyzer plant in Niagara Falls. Governor Kathy Hochul announced the commissioner of health designated COVID-19 "a highly contagious communicable disease that presents a serious risk of harm to the public health" under New York state's HERO Act, which requires all employers to implement workplace safety plans in the event of an airborne infectious disease, helping to prevent workplace infections.
