Niagara-Wheatfield girls volleyball fly into states

Last Saturday, the Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons girls volleyball team notched the program's first-ever Section VI title. On Friday night, at Webster-Thomas High School, the girls etched another first into its history. The Falcons defeated the Irondequoit Eagles, 3-1, in the Far West Regional crossover matchup. The victory sends the girls to the New York State Tournament in Glens Falls.

DOT, NYPA announce award of first contract to remove portion of former Robert Moses Parkway in Niagara Falls

The New York State Department of Transportation and the New York Power Authority on Friday announced a major milestone in the project to remove an underutilized two-mile stretch of the former Robert Moses Parkway (now called the Niagara Scenic Parkway) along the Niagara Gorge in Niagara Falls, to create a park-like setting that will give residents and visitors alike unimpeded access to the gorge and provide added recreational opportunities.

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo's administration and Niagara Falls Mayor Paul A. Dyster announced a roundtable event will take place in Niagara Falls to discuss the upcoming 2020 census and steps to ensure a full count of all New Yorkers. This will be the latest in a series of census-specific regional events to take place across the state in coming months, which will include local stakeholders and U.S. Census Bureau representatives.
'Operation: Rock Out Hunger' to help families in need of holiday meals

In an effort to provide holiday meals to hungry community members, "97 Rock," WKBW-TV Channel 7 Eyewitness News, Kaleida Health and the Food Bank of WNY are teaming up for the 13th annual "Operation: Rock Out Hunger." The weeklong holiday food and fund drive will be held from 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, through 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 21, at a new location this year: the Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital parking lot, 1540 Maple Road, Williamsville.
New York State Office of Alcoholism & Substance Abuse Services announces opening of new addiction treatment program for women in Niagara County

The New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (NYS OASAS) announced the opening of the Aurora Village Residential Treatment Facility, operated by Horizon Health Services. The 25-bed facility will provide addiction treatment services for women ages 18 and over.
Catholic Health receives area's top grades in Leapfrog safety report

Strengthening its position as the area leader in quality and patient safety, Catholic Health has once again earned the region's highest overall score in the Leapfrog Group's fall 2018 hospital safety grade report - and the only "A" grades in Western New York. In the national report released Thursday, Catholic Health hospitals received four of only 12 "A" safety grades that were given in all of New York state.

State Department of Transportation set to hire nearly 500 maintenance workers

New York State Department of Transportation Acting Commissioner Paul A. Karas announced applications are available for approximately 470 positions as permanent and seasonal maintenance staff all across upstate New York and Long Island. Beginning in September each year, the DOT begins to hire and train staff on equipment and best practices, with the aim of having them ready to plow as soon as winter weather begins.
Niagara County Department of Health offers free program to help community prevent diabetes

November is National Diabetes Month, a time when communities across the country team up to bring attention to diabetes and its impact on millions of Americans. Nearly 30 million Americans suffer from diabetes, while another 86 million have prediabetes. The total national cost of diagnosed diabetics is estimated to be around $245 billion.
