The Most Rev. Michael William Fisher was installed as the 15th bishop of the Diocese of Buffalo on Friday. The diocese said it was "a ceremony rich in the church's ancient and sacred ritual, but substantially scaled-down due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic threat."

Due to the uncertainty of the restrictions going forward for COVID-19, unfortunately the Mayor's Charity Snowflake Ball will not be held in February. Since masks and social distancing are in effect, as well as groups no larger than 25 people gathering, the ball seems impossible to host this year.
NYS/SNAP: 6-month increase in food benefits

The New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance announced New Yorkers enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will receive a 15% increase to their monthly food benefits for January through June. In addition, all households will receive the maximum monthly benefit for January under the emergency food assistance that has been issued since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in March.

SBA reopens PPP

The U.S. Small Business Administration, in consultation with the U.S. Treasury Department, reopened the Paycheck Protection Program loan portal to PPP-eligible lenders with $1 billion or less in assets for first- and second-draw applications on Friday. The portal will fully open on Tuesday, Jan. 19, to all participating PPP lenders to submit first- and second-draw loan applications to SBA.

The Board of Education met this past Monday for a lengthy work session. The board began with a briefing on policy updates and review. The BOE policy committee, led by board member Anne Orr, meets monthly to review and recommend new state and federal additions and amendments. In addition, the policy committee reviews each section of the manual annually, to keep the policy manual up-to-date and relevant.

We should not let the death of Jean Wholahan at age 106 on Jan. 7 go without remembering and appreciating her amazing, very long life on Grand Island. She has been an inspiration for me since the 1950s, when her husband, Allan, and I worked on the Citizens' Committee for the High School. It was Jean who encouraged me to join the League of Women Voters, which became a major part of my life.
