Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Thursday announced 12 new pop-up vaccination sites will open in areas where ZIP code data shows the vaccination rate is significantly lower than the statewide average. Locally, a site opened at the Broadway Market (999 Broadway, Buffalo).

The Niagara County Department of Mental Health & Substance Abuse Services (NCDMH), in partnership with the Niagara County Opioid Task Force (OASIS) and local pharmacies, on Thursday announced the launch of Project Awareness, a campaign to provide the Niagara County Crisis Services 24-hour phone line number on prescription medications that have a high potential for abuse and overdose.

The Western New York Land Conservancy has purchased a 44-acre forest on Love Road on Grand Island from the Buffalo Ornithological Society. The purchase was funded by the Greenway Ecological Standing Committee and was supported by the Niagara River Greenway Commission.

Twenty-four additional beds will soon be available at Mount St. Mary's Hospital's Clearview Treatment Services to accommodate the growing need for inpatient treatment for individuals suffering from substance use disorders. Hospital and Catholic Health leadership, Clearview staff, and community partners attended a dedication and open house of the renovated treatment unit housed on the third floor of the hospital, located at 5300 Military Road, Lewiston.

University at Buffalo scientists who are doing genomic sequencing of COVID-19 samples report the delta variant of the coronavirus has been detected in Erie County. First identified in India and now responsible for a significant outbreak in the United Kingdom, the delta variant is believed to be as much as 200%, or twice as transmissible, as the original coronavirus strain.

The Erie County Department of Social Services' Adult Protective Services division announced it will be receiving a grant for $275,732, the largest amount granted to any county in New York outside of New York City, to enhance, improve and expand the ability of APS to investigate allegations of abuse, neglect and exploitation in the context of COVID-19.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday announced COVID-19 restrictions are lifted immediately as 70% of New Yorkers aged 18 or older have received the first dose of their COVID-19 vaccination series. The state's health guidance and "New York Forward" industry-specific guidelines - including social gathering limits, capacity restrictions, social distancing, cleaning and disinfection, health screening, and contact information for tracing - are now optional for retail, food services, offices, gyms and fitness centers, amusement and family entertainment, hair salons, barber shops and personal care services, among other commercial settings.

Congressman Brian Higgins announced a federal grant totaling $4,911,595 for Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute (HWI) to establish the National Crystallization Center.
