Gov. Kathy Hochul on Wednesday signed legislation (S.5160-B/A.229c) amending section 34 of the municipal home rule law to provide that, regardless of any local law to the contrary, county reapportionment of members of local legislative bodies is first and foremost subject to state and federal constitutional requirements ensuring fairness and equity, and in furtherance of the principle of "one person, one vote."

The New York State Division of Consumer Protection (DCP) and the state Department of Public Service is alerting consumers of phone calls in which scammers, pretending to be from electric companies, are looking for overdue payments - and threatening to suspend electricity services unless they receive a payment immediately. Payment has been requested by means of untraceable services such as gift cards, and money transfer apps, including PayPal and Zelle.

Center for Elder Law & Justice awarded federal funding

The Center for Elder Law & Justice has been awarded funding through the Department of Justice Office on Violence Against Women to provide enhanced training and services to end abuse in later life in Niagara County. The agency will partner with the Niagara County Sheriff's Office, the district attorney of Niagara County, and Pinnacle Community Services to provide training programs to law enforcement, prosecutors, units of local government, victim service providers, and other organizations in recognizing and addressing instances of elder abuse.

New York drivers need to buck up this fall and watch for animals on the roads. AAA analyzed New York crash data and found that October, November and December are by far the peak months for animal crashes, notably deer, in the Empire State. There were 33,956 animal-related crashes statewide in 2020 - the second-highest level in the past decade - that's equivalent to one animal-related crash every 16 minutes.

Credit unions have responded to the needs of their members and communities by offering business loans."
