Though summer may be winding down, the free summer concerts in Youngstown are still in full swing. These concerts, a collaboration between volunteers and the Village of Youngstown mayor and Board of Trustees, have been bringing music to the area on Friday nights for over 20 years. Musical acts this year have featured bagpipes to yacht rock, and lots in between.

Niagara County Sheriff's Office K9 Reggie will receive a bullet and stab protective vest thanks to a charitable donation from nonprofit organization Vested Interest in K9s Inc. K9 Reggie's vest is sponsored by Christine Rath of Youngstown, and will be embroidered with the sentiment "Born to Love - Trained to Serve - Loyal Always." Delivery is expected within eight to 10 weeks.

"Reelin' for a Cure" is returning to Olcott and Wilson harbors from 6 a.m. to noon Friday, Aug. 19. In its seventh year, the fishing tournament will host hundreds of women angling for prize money, bragging rights and the opportunity to raise money for women battling cancer.

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation announced a wetland restoration project will begin at Woodlawn Beach State Park in Erie County this fall. The $1.6 million project is being funded through a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency through the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.

After retirement from his career as an electrical engineer, Gregory Madejski discovered a new passion as a boat builder. For 26 years, he built kayaks and canoes, some from kits and some not, from cedar plywood and from cedar strips. He also paddled those boats in Paddles Up at Beaver Island State Park and elsewhere.

A wind blew across the water at Beaver Island State Park at 7 a.m., July 30. I stepped into a kayak for the first ecotour of the 2022 Paddles Up event at the park's beach and was pushed off. The water was slightly choppy as the group of kayakers, led by retired government biologist Paul Leuchner, started to travel in the river, heading around the island.
