GIBOE: $53 million budget approved

After a five-month budget development process, the Grand Island Board of Education unanimously approved a resolution for the proposed 2012-13 school district budget in the amount of $53,079,789. This includes a 2.4 percent tax rate increase and a tax levy capped at 3.25 percent. The budget will go to Grand Island voters on Tuesday, May 15.

Dick and Jenny Benz met in New Orleans at the Upperline Restaurant - she was a server and he was the chef. After getting married on Uncle PJ's boat on the West River, they decided to open a little dinner restaurant in uptown New Orleans. They called it Dick & Jenny's, of course.

Sixteen years ago, Grand Island Central School Superintendent Paul Fields appointed Bruce Benson and challenged him to "take Grand Island Middle School into the next century." With forethought and meticulous planning, Benson met the task head on and accomplished exactly that.

During his tenure as principal, six new classrooms were added to the existing building, and it was renamed the "Veronica E. Connor Middle School." More significantly, however, Benson was instrumental in Connor Middle School's rating as one of the top 10 middle schools in Western New York.

World premiere comedy at Ghostlight Theatre

The world premiere comedy "Regrets Only," by L. Don Swartz, will be presented at the Ghostlight Theatre, 170 Schenck St., North Tonawanda. The show is on stage May 3 at 7 p.m.; May 4, 5, 11, 12, 18 and 19 at 8 p.m.; and on May 20 at 2 p.m.

"Regrets Only" features Joann V. Mis and Debby Koszelak Swartz as two grumpy Polish ladies, Lottie and Bernice, who crash a wedding reception and turn the celebration into a hysterical nightmare. "Regrets Only" is the fifth installment of the popular "Lottie & Bernice" series, following "Get Off My Cabbage," "The Lottie & Bernice Show," "Here We Sit" and "Danse Macabre."
