The U.S. surgeon general is warning that America's youth face a "devastating" mental health crisis. The American Academy of Pediatrics calls it "a national children's mental health emergency." And obstetrician/gynecologists and other primary care providers are seeing increased anxiety and depression in their pregnant and postpartum patients.

Sheila Strott, an incoming freshman in Niagara University's College of Hospitality, Sport and Tourism Management, is the 2022 recipient of the Merani scholarship, a collaboration between Niagara and the Merani Hotel Group to provide opportunities for high-level experiential learning in the hospitality industry. Strott, a Grand Island resident who graduated from Mount St. Mary Academy in June, will receive a four-year, $30,000 scholarship, and three paid rotating internships at Merani properties.

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Niagara River Greenway Fund Standing Committee will hold a meeting at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 3, to vote on funding for a project being proposed by State Parks. The Kupiec family, along with ConnectLife and the Gratwick Hose Volunteer Fire Co., will host a community blood drive honoring the memory of North Tonawanda native Brandon Kupiec. Brandon died unexpectedly in 2013 at age 20. His family holds this yearly event in his honor.

The heat of summer is here, and this weekend is expected to be another hot one. AAA Western and Central New York is reminding motorists to be aware of the dangers of hot cars. Since 1998, 917 children have died from pediatric vehicular heatstroke, including at least 10 deaths already reported this year in the U.S. While an overwhelming majority of these deaths are accidental, such tragedies are often preventable.
