Congressman Brian Higgins, D-NY-26, welcomed news that the Trump administration is extending federal orders assigning National Guard members to COVID-19 response through mid-August. The president had previously indicated plans to end the current order when it expires on June 24, leaving National Guard members serving on the frontlines of the pandemic response ineligible for federal benefits.

The National Hockey League on Tuesday announced a "Return to Play" plan, which will see 24 teams compete in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Participating squads will begin in "hub cities." The top four teams in each conference will have a round-robin tournament, while the remaining field of 16 enters a best-of-five-games elimination tournament.

On Saturday, May 23, Niagara County Community College hosted a virtual commencement celebration for the Class of 2020, recognizing over 900 graduates. The prerecorded video allowed graduates to submit a photo of themselves, future plans, and messages of appreciation to friends and family. Additionally, the video included remarks from SUNY Chancellor Kristina Johnson, and NCCC President William Murabito.

Over 20 families participated in the VFW Post 313 Youngstown Memorial Day car drive-by remembrance Monday at Universal, Saint Bernard's, Oakland Rural and Old Fort Niagara cemeteries. At each site, veterans got out of their vehicles and offered a salute to their fallen comrades and a wreath was placed at the War of 1812 monument at Old Fort Niagara.

For the past several months, people across the country have been sheltering at home to help stop the spread of the COVID-19 virus. It is no surprise that many consumers are now nervous about rejoining their communities and reentering public spaces. A recent nationally recognized survey reported 89% of consumers were hesitant about visiting a brick-and-mortar business and 40% cited cleanliness as a top concern.

The U.S. Census Bureau, in coordination with federal, state and local health officials, will begin to drop off 2020 census questionnaire packets at front doors of households in most upstate New York counties starting Wednesday, May 27. This is done in areas where the majority of households do not receive mail at their physical address. The Census Bureau began hand-delivering census materials on March 15, but suspended all fieldwork for this operation on March 18 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

American Medical Response (AMR) of Western New York announced 2019 was a record-best year for cardiac arrest survival statistics, according to the national cardiac arrest registry to enhance survival (CARES) program. Last year, AMR had its highest number of survivors from cardiac arrest, highest rate of survivors with favorable neurologic outcome, and, for the first time, reported survival rates above the national average of agencies to report to the CARES program.

The Carnegie Art Center (CAC) announced the Carnegie Art Festival: A Virtual Art Experience as an alternative to in-person art festivals this summer. The virtual festival will be a website that will be released to the public on July 1 and will be on view until Aug. 1. Finally, we can celebrate the holiday weekend with the beautiful weather we have been craving. Since we are still under the "PAUSE" order of social distancing and wearing masks with no more than 10 in a group, residents need to be careful when picnicking with family.
