Registration is now open for Parks & Trails New York's 24th annual Cycle the Erie Canal tour, an opportunity to bike across New York on part of the Empire State Trail and "take in the rich history of the legendary canal that transformed America." The eight-day, 400-mile recreational bicycle tour from Buffalo to Albany is scheduled for July 10-17.

On Monday, Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz announced the selection of 12 municipal projects for inclusion in the Erie County Consortium 2022 Community Development Block Grant. The application, which will be submitted to the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development for approval, recommends a total Erie County expenditure of $1,462,644.00 for the projects, an investment which will leverage $2,549,497 in local funds and in-kind resources.

Kathy Hochul on Monday announced a multiagency initiative led by the New York State Department of Public Service to encourage eligible New Yorkers to sign up for the federal government's Affordable Connectivity Program, a newly launched program that provides discounts of up to $30 a month toward internet service for low-income families.

Niagara County Clerk Joseph A. Jastrzemski on Monday reminded pistol permitholders that, under the New York Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act (SAFE) of Jan. 15, 2013, they must recertify every five years with the New York State Police. That means those who either received their permit or recertified in 2017 must now recertify by the date of issuance on their permit.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) on Sunday announced the winners of the 79th Annual Golden Globe Awards, from the Beverly Hilton. On Monday, New York State Sen. Sean Ryan announced local artist Julia Bottoms was selected to design a statue honoring the late Shirley Chisholm. Chisholm, who is entombed in Forest Lawn's Cemetery's Birchwood Mausoleum, made history as the first Black woman to serve in the U.S. Congress, and the first to run for president. The statue will be installed near the mausoleum this fall.

At 11:49 a.m. Sunday, the Niagara Falls Fire Department responded to the 600 block of 16th Street for a possible structure fire. Upon arrival, firefighters observed heavy flames from the front of the building's first floor. The fire also traveled to the house next door.

Gov. Kathy Hochul on Friday announced new guidance recommending booster doses for all New Yorkers ages 12 and older. The guidance, following action by the CDC, recommends that people, including the newly authorized 12-15-year-old age group, who received the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, should receive a booster dose at least five months after their second dose.

New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli is urging New Yorkers to spend the gift cards they received this holiday season in a timely fashion. If not, the money could eventually get turned over to the Office of Unclaimed Funds. In the past seven years, the amount returned to DiNapoli's office in unused gift cards has risen sharply from $5.8 million in 2014 to $16 million in 2021.

The Erie County Department of Health is coordinating a distribution of nearly 40,000 COVID-19 at-home antigen test kits to Erie County village, town and city emergency managers. Each test kit box includes two antigen tests, for a total of about 80,000 tests.

As part of its final audit/regular meeting session of 2021 last week, the Lewiston Town Board opened with a public hearing en route to moving on a conceptual plan for an existing planned unit development. The action included a rezoning of the land area from R-1 (single family residential) to PUD status on Northridge Drive and Ridge Road, and now allows for an additional 10 units to the Northridge Drive apartments complex.
