COVID-19 restrictions in 2020 and 2021 led consumers to seek safe, socially distanced family fun in a boat, and the rising tide of buyers lifted the U.S. recreational boating industry to historic sales levels. The resulting spike in first-time boat buyers and overall boating participation led to increased incidents, injuries and fatalities as per the latest U.S. Coast Guard data. Fortunately, these findings also revealed a key solution to this problem: boater education and training.

Many residents are unaware Grand Island is the home to three state parks: Buckhorn Island State Park, Beaver Island State Park, and Big Six Marina State Park. According to Mark Mistretta, western district director of New York State Parks, he has heard on several occasions, "I didn't even know this (Big Six Marina State Park) was here. This is beautiful. In the Niagara Falls Power Vista Visitors Center, robots maneuvered around obstacles, moved up and down ramps, threw balls through miniature basketball hoops, and scooped up orange disks that they then pushed across a grid. Community members joined local elected leaders and event organizers, clapping and cheering outside the former schoolhouse.
