In recent years, new drugs to treat multiple sclerosis have significantly improved both the quality of life and longevity for patients with MS. Many of them now live well into their 60s and 70s, a significant improvement from just a generation ago when few patients lived to be 70.

As town supervisor of the Town of Grand Island, I cannot place my support behind the mandatory mask mandate issued by Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz. Personally, I wear a mask where required and support vaccinations. However, I feel that the mandate will damage our businesses by forcing our residents to cross the bridge to Niagara County, where the mandate doesn't exist.

The state Office of Mental Health (OMH) has received a $200,000 award to help people with mental illness gain access to healthy, fresh produce. The grant, from the state Health Foundation, will be used to expand the FreshConnect Checks program and bring mobile farmers markets to congregate housing sites for residents with serious mental illness. OMH will also develop a curriculum for residents focused on purchasing, preparing, and consuming healthy foods.

Legislation S.033/A.3456 will create a small business liaison with the departments of Agriculture and Markets, Environmental Conservation, Labor, Transportation, and Taxation and Finance.

Gov. Kathy Hochul has signed legislation requiring local social service districts to offer a direct deposit payment option for subsidized child care. Her team said this would modernize and streamline the system for social service payments to child care providers. The Office of Children and Family Services is required to issue these new regulations within one year of the signing of this legislation.
