Omicron variant has been detected in Erie County, UB scientists report

The highly transmissible omicron variant of the novel coronavirus has been detected in Erie County, University at Buffalo scientists and Erie County health officials reported Wednesday. The variant was found in virus samples, analyzed by a UB team that has been sequencing the virus in the region, of Western New Yorkers who tested positive this month.

Times Beach Nature Preserve closed following last weekend's windy weather

The Erie County Department of Parks, Recreation and Forestry announced the closure of the Times Beach Nature Preserve. This action follow's last weekend's windy weather and the seiche it created caused damage to the preserve's trails, creating safety concerns and forcing the preserve's closure to the public. It is the latest of several weather-related closures of Times Beach due to seiche events since the October 2019 storm.
Hochul announces $230 million in additional food assistance for New Yorkers in December

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced all New Yorkers enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will receive the maximum allowable level of food benefits for December. All households participating in SNAP - including those already at the maximum level of benefits - will receive a supplemental allotment later this month, bringing in roughly $230 million in federal funding into the state's economy this month, and more than $2.4 billion since January.

New funding to help counties with COVID-19 response costs

DiNapoli: Local sales tax collections up more than 17% in November

Statewide local sales tax collections grew by 17.5% in November compared to the same month in 2020, State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli announced. Overall, local collections totaled almost $1.6 billion, up $235 million from November of last year. Collections for the month were also notably robust when compared to prepandemic levels, up 9.2% (or $133 million) from November of 2019.
