Niagara County Clerk Joseph A. Jastrzemski on Tuesday said the federal Department of Homeland Security is delaying enforcement of REAL ID requirements by 24 months, from May 3, 2023, to May 7, 2025. At that time, one will need a REAL ID to board any domestic flights, enter a military base and access certain federal facilities.

Gov. Kathy Hochul on Tuesday signed legislation to crack down on unwanted telemarketing calls. Legislation S.8450-B/A.8319-C requires telemarketers to give customers the option to be added to the company's do-not-call list at the outset of certain telemarketing calls. The new legislation is designed to help safeguard New Yorkers from continuous unwanted calls.

Gov. Kathy Hochul has signed legislation to protect New Yorkers' right to vote and improve the voting process. Legislation (S.284C/A.642C) requires the counting and canvassing of affidavit ballots cast by eligible voters who appear at the wrong polling place, as long as they are voting in the correct county and assembly district.

Older rural New Yorkers are struggling to age in place due to a dearth of affordable and accessible housing, while many older adults who no longer drive or don't have access to public transportation or privately owned vehicles face numerous challenges in obtaining rides to such essential services as medical appointments and grocery stores.

For several weeks, Village of Lewiston trustees have been debating what to do with "sandwich boards" promoting Lewiston businesses. They relaxed municipal laws pertaining to A-frame posts at the start of the coronavirus pandemic, and have continued to permit the markers - particularly noting the need to direct people to slightly off-Center Street retailers Sgt. Peppers Hot Sauces and Brewed and Bottled Craft Beer Shop.

The New York State Canal Corp. today announced it will be surveying water retaining embankments and select dam structures along the canal system beginning the week of Dec. 5. The survey work will be completed through drone flights to collect terrain data and photographs of the canal embankments and infrastructure. The information gathered will be used to aid in the planning of upcoming inspections.

Jolly Old St. Nicholas was scheduled to appear from inside his float in the International Peace Garden but, as the weather wasn't cooperative, opted to greet children and families from inside Deal Realty (451 Center St.)

The proposed town tax cap override in the 2023 budget is being driven by a large increase in interest rates on $24 million borrowed by the town over a number of years. This includes $12 million borrowed to eliminate sanitary sewer overflows, explained Pam Barton, supervising accountant for the Town of Grand Island.

On Wednesday, the Niagara Gospel Mission invited local government leaders, veterans organizations, community groups, pastors, law enforcement and military members to take place in its first symposium on homelessness, with an emphasis on the homeless veterans in Niagara Falls, and the difficulties transitioning out of the military.
