St. Francis of Assisi Parish, 73 Adam St., City of Tonawanda, will host its "Family Fun Fest" from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21. The event includes a theme tray raffle, white elephant booth, homemade baked goods, a 50/50, games for kids, face painting, cornhole and Kan Jam, a dime toss, and a super raffle with 10 prizes (including $300, a 58-inch TV, and a handcrafted cherry wood porch glider).

Late in November of 2022, Islander Kim Kalman traveled to Washington, D.C., to donate her bone marrow to someone she had never met. The actual donation occurred on Nov. 23, the day before Thanksgiving. After having been on Be The Match's donor list since 2009, she got the call that she was a match with a 62-year-old man who was "suffering from Myelodysplastic syndrome, which is a group of cancers in which immature blood cells in the bone marrow don't mature and become healthy blood," Kalman explained.

Grand Island's Fall History Weekend, sponsored by the Grand Island Historic Preservation Advisory Board, will take place Sept. 7 and 8. A variety of activities will be held throughout the Island during the weekend, including a dedication of the cupola that was part of the former Town Hall, built sometime after 1852.

The Niagara Pioneer Strikers completed a successful season by winning the Buffalo & Western New York Junior Soccer League Division 1 championship. The team finished the season with an 8-2 record in the league, and an overall record of 11-4-2

Mary Jean Povlock (formerly Barbone), of Edgewater, Florida, age 93, passed away July 12, 2024. She was born Dec. 25, 1930, in Salamanca, New York, to Eva (Kalamanka) and Phillip Povlock. She graduated from Salamanca High School and went on to attend Syracuse University, earning a Bachelor of Science in 1952. She was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority Sigma Nu Chapter.

A U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service assessment crew will conduct work in Cattaraugus Creek Aug. 13-22 to estimate the abundance of sea lampreys.
