Tribune's year in high school sports

Over the past year, Niagara-Wheatfield and North Tonawanda High School have been battling on the field, with student-athletes showing pride for their respective schools. The two schools accomplished a few feats that made hometown residents proud to call the area home. With that, here is a recap of some of those accomplishments from the past year.

Wheatfield Commons celebrates grand opening

Wheatfield Commons, a DePaul Senior Living Community located at 3920 Forest Parkway in Wheatfield, celebrated its grand opening on Wednesday, Dec. 20. A 55,000-square-foot senior living community providing both assisted living and memory care accommodations to families in and around Niagara County, Wheatfield Commons is now open and accepting new residents.

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos announced the first group of participants in the state's $2 million pilot pharmaceutical take-back program. Participants include 80 retail pharmacies, hospitals and long-term care facilities across the state.

An original experiment proposal developed by a team of students from Lockport High School was among the finalists in the Student Spaceflight Experiments Program (SSEP), Mission 12 to the International Space Station. The annual Youngstown/Town of Porter Community Holiday Baskets project has been declared a great success this year. Scores of volunteers worked a village-townwide collection campaign from Dec. 11-16 at the Red Brick Village Center gym.
