On Monday, New York State Sen. Rob Ortt joined his Republican colleagues, State Senate Deputy Minority Leader Joseph A. Griffo, Sen. Rich Funke, Sen. Tom O'Mara, Sen. George M. Borrello, Sen. Pat Gallivan, Sen. Daphne Jordan, Sen. Pam Helming and Sen. Fred Akshar, to roll out an economic "Reset, Reopen" plan for Upstate and Western New York to coincide with the virus's regression.

If you listen to state and county leaders' information, you must be mindful of when we will begin to reopen. Presently, we are still under the governor's "PAUSE" order. As the number of cases in Niagara County continue to rise with 488 and 60 cases being in N.T., we have not reached the peak of infection or are even plateauing. In order to reopen, we need the rate of infection to decrease.

Attorney General Letitia James on Saturday issued guidelines to protect New Yorkers using funeral homes, and reminded funeral homes her office will take action against any entity that violates consumer rights. James also lauded action by the New York State Cemetery Board, for which the attorney general advocated, that will address severe cremation delays in the downstate region and make it easier for funeral homes to transfer deceased to upstate crematories with more capacity.

The family-owned and operated Hartman's Distilling Co. on Chicago Street in Buffalo, which normally focuses on the production of bourbon, rye, vodka, gin and craft cocktails, has shifted much of its production to bottles of hand sanitizers because of the COVID-19 crisis. In addition, it is donating one bottle of hand sanitizer for each one it sells.

At a time when quality and safety are paramount in health care, Catholic Health once again received Western New York's highest cumulative score in the Leapfrog Group's Spring 2020 Hospital Safety Grade Report. In the national report released this week, Kenmore Mercy Hospital and Mount St. Mary's Hospital earned consecutive "A" safety grades, while Mercy Hospital of Buffalo, Sisters of Charity Hospital and its St. Joseph Campus each earned a "B" grade, improving their overall scores from last year's fall report.

The New York State Department of Labor on Friday announced it had distributed over $4.6 billion in unemployment benefits since the coronavirus pandemic began impacting businesses in early March. In total, the DOL has processed over 1.6 million completed applications for unemployment benefits since March 9, including for both traditional unemployment insurance and the new COVID-19 pandemic unemployment assistance program.
