Above and Beyond: Training never ends for Island volunteers

For the past several months, 40 Grand Island firefighters and others from as far away as Toronto have given up Sundays with their families to attend all-day emergency medical technician training sessions at Grand Island Fire Co. headquarters in order to upgrade their professional skills so they can better serve their communities.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection Field Operations announced the arrest this week of a citizen of Gambia on charges of false claim to U.S. citizenship, fraud and misuse of a passport. The subject is also wanted on charges of credit card fraud.

During the winter season, various Niagara County municipalities, in the course of their work involving snow removal and/or ice control, encounter many problems. Two of these directly involve the public. The first is the depositing of snow on highways or shoulders by private individuals, and the second being mailboxes damaged during snow removal.
Bingo for adults offered in Village of Lewiston

The Village of Lewiston Recreation Department will sponsor bingo for adults (ages 16 years and older) on Friday, Jan. 21, 2011, starting at 6:30 p.m., in the gym of the Village of Lewiston Red Brick Municipal Building, North Fourth and Onondaga streets. The cost will be $10 per person, and includes admission, cards, door prizes, desserts and beverages.

Kids Count lowers rates to reach out to families

In an effort to reach as many families in the community as possible, regardless of their economic situation, the Kids Count After School Enrichment Program held at the First Presbyterian Church in Youngstown will lower its rates to $2 per child per day.
