Village of Lewiston Treasurer Stephanie Myers presented the Board of Trustees with a preliminary $4.07 million budget for fiscal year 2021-22, which begins June 1. The proposed property tax rate is $7.76 per $1,000 of assessed valuation, which would be a dime increase over the current rate.

$3.36 million in Greenway funds for Veterans Memorial Park project

On Tuesday, the Host Community Standing Committee (HCSC), which administers and oversees projects financed by the Niagara River Greenway Recreation/Tourism Fund, awarded $3.36 million to Veterans Memorial Community Park in the Town of Niagara. The funds will be used to cover phases III and IV of the park's master plan. The project was deemed consistent with the principles of the Niagara Greenway by the Greenway Commission on March 3.
Army Corps report focuses on Old Fort Niagara shoreline protection

A 735-page report represents the federal government's response to the Lake Ontario shoreline erosion problems that threaten historically significant structures at Old Fort Niagara.

Earlier this week, all of Western New York's Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) together called on New York to reverse or delay the 340B "carve out" included in the 2021 state budget, which is currently being negotiated. The 340B "carve out," they said, "would mean a devastating loss in funding for the region's most vulnerable and traditionally marginalized patients, which include communities of color, individuals living with HIV, refugees and the LGBTQ+ community."
Legal Aid files lawsuit to secure New Yorkers in prison access to COVID-19 vaccine

The Legal Aid Society has filed a lawsuit in New York State Supreme Court against New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and New York State Health Commissioner Howard Zucker on behalf of three persons incarcerated in New York state prisons, "demanding the state grant people in custody the same access to the COVID-19 vaccine that has been afforded others in virtually every other congregate residential setting - settings which by their very nature place individuals at high risk for contracting and transmitting the virus that causes COVID-19."

Andrew Cuomo on Wednesday announced appointments are now available at 10 new state-run mass-vaccination sites across the state, including The Conference & Event Center Niagara Falls at 101 Old Falls St. All 10 sites will open Friday, March 19, and will operate from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.
