Niagara Catholic Jr./Sr. High School recently held its annual walk-a-thon, "Car Smash," after-walk picnic, and dodgeball games as a kick-off to Homecoming Week. Students in grades 7 through 12, along with faculty and staff, were able to enjoy a rally, followed by a seven-mile walk to raise funds for their school expenses.

The first-ever Wearable Art Fashion Show to benefit the Aquarium of Niagara took place before a sold-out crowd Thursday at Wine on Third in Niagara Falls. Featuring the creations of artists/designers from the Niagara Arts and Cultural Center, as well as area retailers, the runway show spotlighted unique, wearable art fashions made from recyclable materials.

Empire State Development's board of directors met today in New York City and approved $6.1 million in funding for projects that will create more than 70 new jobs and retain nearly 300 jobs throughout the Empire State. Joan A. Droit had a lifetime commitment to children and young adults. For 40 years she was a Grand Island teacher, beginning at the elementary level, and retiring from the high school, where she taught English, humanities and social studies and was always active in school activities.

Islanders are mourning the passing of a longtime teacher who put students at the center of her work.
Retired teacher and current school board trustee Joan Droit died Saturday. She was elected to the Board of Education on May 17, 2011.
"The Grand Island Central School District wishes to acknowledge the contribution Joan Droit made on behalf of students, faculty and the school community at large," the district said in a statement.
