Town of Lewiston: Dead ash trees, green space woes

Town of Lewiston-owned green space issues again came into discussion as Parks/Recreation Director Mike Dashineau briefed Town Board members Monday on the continuing problem of dead and dying ash trees - a situation he said now affects 80 percent of all trees in Lewiston.

The Village of Lewiston Planning Commission on Monday voted unanimously to approve site plan changes at the Ellicott Development plaza site on Center, North Eighth and Onondaga streets. Specifically, members accepted a proposal to re-subdivide adjoining property located behind the building housing tenants including Vincenzo's Pizza House and Sue's Frame of Mind.

Runners, take your mark: Nancy Price 5K set for May 12

The Nancy Price Memorial 5K Run will be held Saturday, May 12, starting at the Youngstown Firehall, 625 Third St. The race route will take runners through the village and along the river walking path at Fort Niagara State Park, ultimately ending back at the Youngstown Fire Department. Resident Mark Elias inquired on the rough road conditions plaguing Morgan Drive, the Morgan Farms area and the town's plans on addressing the matter. Jumping right into it, Town Highway Superintendent Dave Trane replied the town's considerable schedule of road related work and repairs is at last underway, with paving delays thus far placed on the prolonged winter type weather conditions.

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on Monday announced the awarding of $2.9 million in Lake Ontario Flood Relief funds to local governments in Wayne, Orleans, Niagara, Cayuga and Jefferson counties dedicated to restoration resiliency and recovery efforts following last year's flooding, and to protect the community from the damage of future storms. The state has committed $95 million to recovery efforts to support homeowners, small businesses and community infrastructure.

As Western New York continues to be deluged with heavy rains coming off a weekend of ice storms, wastewater treatment plants throughout the area are now contending with excessive inflow/infiltration problems. It's the result of plants receiving excessive stormwater run-off combined with the handling of normal sewage inflow/infiltration.

The second phase of expansion at Hibbard's Original Frozen Custard was approved Monday by the Village of Lewiston Board of Trustees. The Hibbard family was granted a special use permit for a 24-foot-by-13-foot concrete pad and customer queuing area with overhanging canopy. This waiting spot will be located directly behind newly enlarged serving windows, which were previously approved.
New York Power Authority fishing piers to open for season
