The meeting saw long-time Lewiston Councilman Bill Geiben declare his intentions to not seek reelection in 2023. Then came the sudden resignation of Cathy Cvijetinovic from her position as Lewiston Recreation Department director.

Niagara Jet City Cruises leaves Youngstown

At a Feb. 9 meeting, Youngstown Mayor Rob Reisman and village trustees announced Niagara Jet City Cruises (Niagara Jet Adventures) would not return to its Water Street facility for the 2023 season. The company was operated by City Cruises Canada, a subsidiary of the Hornblower Group based in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Officials stated the decision was based on marketing, and reflected tourism changes brought on by the coronavirus pandemic.

Mount St. Mary's Hospital has appointed Sarah Tabone as director of the Clearview Treatment Services program. She brings 20 years of experience to this role, and holds a BA degree in psychology from Niagara University, along with CASAC Advanced Counselor Certification. Tabone is a recipient of Niagara University's Presidential Scholarship.

NYS announces $100 million to repave roads impacted by extreme weather

Gov. Kathy Hochul on Wednesday announced $100 million in state funding has been released to support the renewal of roadways impacted by extreme weather. The funding supports repaving projects at 64 locations, totaling almost 520 lane miles of pavement, and "complements the record level of investment in infrastructure across New York state."

Fatal fire in Youngstown

On Thursday, at 8:12 p.m., the Niagara County Sheriff's Office communications center received a 911 call reporting smoke in the apartment building located at 136 Jackson St., in the Village of Youngstown. NCSO deputies and officers from the Town of Lewiston Police Department responded and confirmed smoke coming from the second floor of the building.
Niagara University receives grants totaling $500,000 from Mother Cabrini Foundation

Niagara University has received a $300,000 grant from the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation to continue and enhance work done by its College of Nursing to foster nurse resilience, effectively bridge the transition from student to health care professional, address a critical shortage in the nursing workforce, increase awareness of health inequities, and develop effective approaches to care in complex environments across Western New York, with an emphasis on Niagara County.

Parachute Credit Counseling - formerly known as Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Buffalo (CCCS) - announced it is launching the ninth year of its "Niagara County Free Tax Preparation Program" on Jan. 31. Parachute will use a "drop-off" process, with sites in Niagara Falls at Pinnacle Community Services, 1522 Main St.; and in Lockport, at the Lockport Library, 23 East Ave.
