Niagara Pride holding 2nd annual winter sock drive to benefit WNY homeless

Niagara Pride is hosting its second annual winter sock drive to benefit local homeless. The organization seeks donations of new socks, undergarments, T-shirts and personal hygiene items, which will be given to local homeless shelters and other agencies.

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, City of Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown recently joined with the Division of Citizen Services and the Buffalo Police Department to announce donation boxes for new coats, gloves, hats, scarves and socks were placed in the lobby of Buffalo City Hall. Donations will be collected through Feb. 1.

Gov. Kathy Hochul on Tuesday announced all New Yorkers enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will receive the maximum allowable level of food benefits for January. All households participating in SNAP - including those already at the maximum level of benefits - will receive a supplemental allotment later this month, bringing in roughly $230 million in federal funding into the state's economy.

On Monday, Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz announced the selection of 12 municipal projects for inclusion in the Erie County Consortium 2022 Community Development Block Grant. The application, which will be submitted to the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development for approval, recommends a total Erie County expenditure of $1,462,644.00 for the projects, an investment which will leverage $2,549,497 in local funds and in-kind resources.
Niagara County clerk reminds pistol permitholders to recertify

Niagara County Clerk Joseph A. Jastrzemski on Monday reminded pistol permitholders that, under the New York Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act (SAFE) of Jan. 15, 2013, they must recertify every five years with the New York State Police. That means those who either received their permit or recertified in 2017 must now recertify by the date of issuance on their permit.
Structure fire on 16th Street in Niagara Falls

At 11:49 a.m. Sunday, the Niagara Falls Fire Department responded to the 600 block of 16th Street for a possible structure fire. Upon arrival, firefighters observed heavy flames from the front of the building's first floor. The fire also traveled to the house next door.
