Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center has launched the start of a seven-day pledge program to connect its patients to primary care within seven days of their hospital discharge from Memorial or an emergency room visit at Memorial. The program guarantees a follow-up appointment with a NFMMC primary care provider at one of Memorial's six primary care locations.

The Thruway Authority is moving ahead with a proposal to adjust tolls on the Thruway beginning Jan. 1, 2021 -- the first since 2010 -- after we have converted to cashless tolling system-wide by the end of 2020. I want to further clarify what this means for motorists in Western New York, and how the proposed changes will impact our customers.

The Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo is now accepting letters of intent for its 2020 competitive grant process through 4 p.m. Feb. 3. Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center has been awarded a Comprehensive Center accreditation by Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program, in partnership with the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. A MBSAQIP accreditation formally acknowledges NFMMC's commitment to providing and supporting quality improvement and patient safety efforts for metabolic and bariatric surgery patients.

Registration is now open for Parks & Trails New York's 22nd annual Cycle the Erie Canal tour, an opportunity to bike across New York and "take in the rich history of the legendary canal that transformed America." The eight-day, 400-mile recreational bicycle tour from Buffalo to Albany is scheduled for July 12-19.

The Buffalo Sabres on Monday announced the start time for the team's game against the Florida Panthers this Saturday, Jan. 4, at KeyBank Center has been changed from 7 p.m. to 1 p.m. The game will be televised on MSG and can be heard on WBEN 930 AM instead of WGR 550 AM, due to Buffalo Bills programming.

A ranking of top fairs and exhibitions has named the Erie County Fair the largest county fair east of the Rocky Mountains, the third-largest county fair in the U.S., and 12th-largest fair overall in North America in 2019. The ranking of fairs, based on attendance, is published annually by CarnivalWarehouse.com. The Top 50 fair list includes all county and state fairs, exhibitions and rodeo shows in the U.S. and Canada.

Niagara County Community College will host the 23rd annual Tech Wars competition from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8. This day boasts more than 700 competitors from over 20 middle and high schools in 20-plus categories. The half-day event consists of robotic competitions, seismic building design, bridge design, parametric modeling and architectural design, among other specialties.

The New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports (NYS OASAS) announced the launch of a new media campaign reminding people of the warning signs of addiction and overdoses, and that addiction can happen to anyone. It is designed to reach people traveling for the holidays and will run through the end of December. The campaign is partially funded with money awarded to New York State under the federal state opioid response grant.

Congressman Brian Higgins on Monday announced Mission:Ignite was awarded a three-year $1,021,122 federal grant to oversee a program that engages AmeriCorps members in expanding science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills among area youth. Mission:Ignite will match the grant with $449,000, while an additional $472,000 in AmeriCorps education awards will be available to participating AmeriCorps members, bringing total investment in the program to $1.942 million.

Heart, Love & Soul was founded by a prayer group from Sacred Heart Parish more than 30 years ago. Originally a pantry group, it became a place for a daily meal, and eventually moved to Ontario Avenue in the City of Niagara Falls.

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and the Department of Environmental Conservation announced early-bird savings for online renewals of the 2020 Empire Pass. Customers who keep their existing card and renew online before Jan. 1 will save $15 off a single or multi-season pass. Those users who renew online from Jan. 1 to March 31 will save $10 - and any online card renewals after those dates will receive a $5 discount from the standard price.
