Charity event set to shine on downtown Buffalo and the Hotel @ The Lafayette on Oct. 11
Suneel's Light Foundation has announced the "A Night to Shine" charity event, the foundation's annual fundraiser, will take place from 6-9:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, at the Hotel @ The Lafayette, 391 Washington St., Buffalo.
The local nonprofit foundation has the mission of raising funds for research that will lead to a cure of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and to increase public awareness of the genetic disease. "A Night to Shine" invites the community to spend an evening mingling with celebrity stars from the worlds of science, media, sports, entertainment and politics, while enjoying fare and cocktails as live music fills the venue.
This year's event will feature all the moments eventgoers have grown to love from this annual event, while offering this year's attendees a few new ones, such as a local craft beer competition and tasting event, as well as themed raffle packages. In addition, the 2018 event will have even more celebrity guest stars attend than in previous years, which traditionally features more than 20 popular, local celebrities from across various professions and fields.
Suneel's Light's "A Night to Shine" will also feature some of the region's top breweries, including Big Ditch, Community Beer Works, Flying Bison, Hamburg Brewing, The New York Beer Project, Old First Ward and Pearl Street Brewing. They will show off their newest fall brews and compete head-to-head for attendees' votes, in an effort to win the coveted Suneel's Light "High Spirits Award."
"A Night to Shine" will also feature a benefit auction with packages for all occasions, including items from both the Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres, in addition to numerous items from some of Western New York's favorite restaurants, shops and companies. All proceeds from the entire event going toward finding treatments and a cure for DMD.
Tickets for the event are $150 per person or $250 per couple. For more information on "A Night to Shine," or to learn either how to purchase tickets or make a donation, visit www.suneelslight.org or call 716-243-0882.
At present, more than 20,000 children in the U.S. suffer from the fatal DMD - more than 100,000 worldwide - with a statistically higher number of identified cases in Western New York than the national average. Typically, during their school-age years, in addition to the physical challenges surrounding this disease, those with DMD suffer from learning disabilities, social isolation and behavioral issues. Symptoms usually appear in male children before age 6 and may be visible in early infancy. Progressive muscle weakness of the legs and pelvis associated with a loss of muscle mass is observed first. Eventually, this weakness spreads to the arms, neck and other areas.
