With the start of camping season underway, Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos reminded campers the New York state firewood transportation regulation is still in effect. Untreated firewood may contain invasive pests that kill trees, and to protect New York's forests, untreated firewood should not be moved more than 50 miles from its source of origin.

'Art on Oliver': Art walk & reception event in North Tonawanda

Town of Newfane receives pharmaceutical collection container

It Happened to Alexa Foundation announced a whole new happening for this summer. The 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization, which assists victims of rape and sexual assault, will hold a different kind of benefit this August. Dubbed "Buffalo's Biggest Basket Raffle," the all-ages event will take place from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, inside the RiverWorks recreational waterfront complex, 359 Ganson St., downtown Buffalo.

Three days of activities, two locations, and free admission highlight The Buffalo History Museum's celebration of the 118th anniversary of the Pan-American Exposition from May 17-19. This weekend will showcase the history of the 1901 World's Fair, which occupied 350 acres of land on the western edge of Buffalo, what is now Delaware Park, extending from Delaware Avenue to Elmwood Avenue and northward to Great Arrow Avenue.

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos announced New York State Compost Awareness Week is May 5-11. The goal, a press release stated, is "to bring attention to the environmental benefits of composting, and celebrate the significant victory in the 2019-20 state budget to establish a new food waste program that maximizes the donation of unused food; expands the availability of composting; and diverts food waste from landfills."

UB joins Action Collaborative on countering US opioid epidemic

The Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo and UB's Clinical Research Institute on Addictions (CRIA) have joined the National Academy of Medicine Action Collaborative on Countering the U.S. Opioid Epidemic, which was announced Tuesday. This joint commitment makes UB one of more than 100 organizations that have joined this national effort.

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos announced the first Saturday in May marks the beginning of the fishing season for several popular coolwater sportfish species, including walleye, northern pike, pickerel and tiger muskellunge. He noted the coolwater conditions of early spring can render walleye and northern pike fishing particularly good, and anglers are encouraged to take advantage of the many opportunities New York has to offer.

Congressman Brian Higgins and Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz were joined by Buffalo City Court Judge Craig Hannah to announce a new federal grant to expand services and support for Buffalo Opioid Intervention Court (OIC) participants. The $2 million award to the Erie County Department of Mental Health, provided through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, brings a community care management model of services to the court. It will expand the court's ability to serve more people.

Swartz and Associate Chief of Staff for research and professor of medicine, anesthesiology and environmental health at the University of Buffalo Dr. Ali El-solh, to announce federal grants from the Department of Veterans Affairs supporting three separate research projects at the Buffalo VA Medical Center. The City of Niagara Falls Community Development Department (NFCD) has released its revised draft 2019 action plan per the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development 2019 allocations for the City of Niagara Falls Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), HOME Investment Partnerships (HOME), and Emergency Solutions Grants (ESG) programs. The revised draft 2019 action plan adjusts the funding levels from the draft 2019 action plan unanimously approved by Niagara Falls City Council on March 6.
