More than 220 volunteers from Mount St. Mary's Hospital and Health Center and the Our Lady of Peace Nursing Care Residence were honored at the annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon on Thursday, April 25, at the Niagara Falls Country Club.

Apprentices from Iron Workers Local 9 donated their time to repair the railings and fire escape at the Historic Opera Hall in Lewiston. The building is owned by the Sacarissa Bell Rose Lodge - Independent Order of Odd Fellows, whose members have been meeting there since the mid-1800s.

The YBPA has chosen Melloni's Market Place as the 2013 Youngstown Business of the Year. Melloni's is located at 200 Lockport St., and has been a welcome addition to the community in the two years since it opened.

Underage drinking has traditionally been a problem and, with today's technology, "fake identification" can be hard to spot. The Lewiston Police Department is taking steps to be proactive and work with local businesses to deter underage drinking.

The Niagara River Greenway Commission announced Tuesday that the public comment period has opened for the 33rd round of projects. Included for consistency review is a submission for the Town of Lewiston Civic Center and one from the Lewiston-Porter School District for the Lewiston-Porter Recreational Center complex phase II.
Details on these and other project submissions are now posted on the Greenway website, http://www.niagaragreenway.org. The public comment period is now under way and will remain open with comments accepted until Tuesday, April 30.

Four area schools have teamed up to raise money for Niagara Hospice in the "Homerun for Hospice" tournament, to be held April 9-10. Varsity and junior varsity baseball teams from Lew-Port, Wilson, Depew and Starpoint will compete on the field and off to raise money for Hospice.

Town of Lewiston Supervisor Steve Reiter (right) and Councilman Michael Marra recently visited Susan Geissler's Youngstown studio to check on the progress of the Tuscarora Heroes Monument. The larger-than-life bronze sculptures will depict a tableau of two Tuscarora men saving a Lewiston woman and her baby during the War of 1812 British attack on Lewiston.

State Sen. George Maziarz announced the New York State Senate unanimously approved legislation (S.1095) he sponsored to expand and rename the Niagara Wine Trail and Niagara Escarpment Wine Trail. In effect, the wine trails would be enlarged to encompass all of Orleans County and Western Monroe County, bringing more wineries than ever into the popular wine trails' network.
"The wine industry in the greater Niagara Region is growing so fast that our laws designating the various wine trails must keep up with the pace of growth," Maziarz said. "Agritourism is an important part of the regional economy and the state must act now to support it."
