Canisius & Higgins announce $379,731 federal grant for college's Institute for Autism Research

Canisius College and Congressman Brian Higgins announced a federal grant from the U.S. Health and Human Services Department awarded to the college's Institute for Autism Research and department of psychology. The $379,731 federal grant, from the National Institutes of Health's National Institute on Aging, will fund research examining the relationship between aging and autism spectrum disorder in older adults.
AAA: Deadly combination of teen driver & teen passenger in vehicle increases risk of death in crash

Inexperienced teen drivers put everyone on the roadway at risk of a deadly crash, especially if they have teen passengers along for the ride. New research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found that, when a teen driver has only teen passengers in their vehicle, the fatality rate for all people involved in a crash increased 51 percent. In contrast, when older passengers (35 or older) ride with a teen driver, overall fatality rates in crashes decreased 8 percent.

EPA school bus rebate program set to reduce diesel emissions

Earlier this month, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced more than $9 million available nationwide in rebates to replace older diesel school buses through EPA's Diesel Emissions Reduction Act (DERA) funding. In March, recipients in New York and New Jersey received rebates totaling $759,000 to replace or retrofit 39 buses. The new and retrofitted buses will reduce pollutants that are linked to health problems such as asthma and lung damage.
LECOM unveils Student All-Stars Program at Sabres games

Pegula Sports & Entertainment and Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) today unveiled the LECOM Student All-Stars Program, one of several new educational initiatives that LECOM is presenting as part of an expanded partnership with the Buffalo Sabres and Buffalo Beauts. Student all-stars will be recognized on the ice with the Sabres starting lineup during five home games this season. Members of the community will be invited to nominate students from all schools for the honor.

Grand Island clips Niagara-Wheatfield in NFL girls soccer title match

In last year's inaugural Niagara Frontier League Crossover Championship girls soccer game, the Grand Island Vikings defeated the Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons, 2-0. In 2018, the two met again in the same game, with Grand Island, once again, walking away victorious, 1-0.

Gerrard P. Bushell, Ph.D., president and CEO of the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY), announced nearly $10 million in upgrades have been completed at SUNY Buffalo State, Alfred State College and the University at Buffalo. The work is part of approximately $31 million in upgrades to SUNY campuses throughout New York that was completed by DASNY during the summer months - ready in time for students to begin the fall semester.
