On Wednesday, North Tonawanda School Superintendent Gregory J. Woytila provided an update on the district's reopening plans during a Q&A via Facebook Live. The update comes as school districts across the state are set to submit their reopening plans to New York state by the end of this week.

Niagara University has taken another step in ensuring the safety of students, faculty and staff when they return to campus for the fall semester. The university has launched the NUAR network, which uses augmented reality to provide real-time physical distancing information through a unique smartphone app.

Registration is now open for William Mattar's annual "Pencils 4 Schools" program. Even though this year's program has a new look, the goal remains the same: to provide pencils for educators and their students. Teachers located in the Buffalo area may register for this year's "Pencils 4 Schools" drive-thru pencil pick up, taking place from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 15, at William Mattar's Williamsville office.

AAA Western and Central New York has heard from many young drivers and their parents who are inquiring about the five-hour prelicensing course that is required in New York state to obtain a driver's license. With classroom instruction not allowed in New York at this time, AAA driver training is closely following state mandates and cannot legally offer the course.

NCCC postpones annual Foundation Scholarship Gala

Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Niagara County Community College has decided to postpone its 30th annual Foundation Scholarship Gala. The event, originally scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 17, at the Niagara Falls Culinary Institute, will now be held in spring 2021. No official date has been set at this time.

Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn announced that, in lieu of an in-person community conversation, his office created a virtual speaker series that was distributed Monday to Buffalo Public School students. The video, "Buffalo Strong: Inspirational Moments for Our Youth," features more than a dozen government leaders, community activists and artists from the Buffalo area offering words of encouragement to students who finished the school year at home due to the pandemic.

The State University of New York at Fredonia announced construction is starting on its first solar/battery project, enabling the Chautauqua County campus in Western New York to lead by example in reducing its carbon footprint with innovative energy efficiency and renewable energy technology. The New York Power Authority, as the campus' energy adviser, is overseeing the project. Selected in a competitive bidding process, the state's strategic partners Oriden, a Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems venture, and Solar Liberty are providing a turnkey installation for the solar-plus-storage solution, from concept to design, installation and financing.

Higgins: Over $1.6 million for workforce training

Congressman Brian Higgins announced $1.6 million in additional federal funding for the Buffalo and Erie County Workforce Investment Board (WIB). The funding, which is allocated through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Administration for Children and Families, will be directed to the WIB's Health Profession Opportunity Grant (HPOG) program. The program previously received two five-year awards; this extends WIB's successful HPOG program for an 11th year.
