Conservation class sweeps at the Regional Envirothon Competition

Conservation teacher Paul Dewey certainly has something to be proud of. Three of the teams from the Niagara Career and Technical Education Center took first, second and third at the Regional Envirothon Competition. 

The competition is run by the Niagara County Soil and Water Conservation District and is held at Bond Lake Park Nature Center. Teams of five students in grades 9 through 12 are tested on topics including wildlife, aquatics, forestry, soil/land use and a current environmental issue. The goal is learning how to work with community groups and government agencies to solve potential real-life environmental problems that local communities may face in the future. 

Congratulations was extended to first place champions: Jacob Phillips (Niagara-Wheatfield), Alexander Ralph (Royalton-Hartland), Marcus Schwarzmueller (Wilson), Jacob Taylor (Niagara-Wheatfield) and Elliot Wilczak (Niagara-Wheatfield).  

Second place champions: Noah Becker (North Tonawanda), Austin Gorton (Lewiston-Porter), Merissa Hescox (Niagara-Wheatfield), Nakia Newell (Niagara-Wheatfield) and Amanda Schurr (Starpoint).  

Third place winners: Justin Halstrom (Niagara Falls), Trinity Rafter (Niagara-Wheatfield), Cheyenne Reuillard (Starpoint) and Megan Weiser (Starpoint). 

The New York State Envirothon is held at the end of May at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva.
