Niagara County seeking Purple Heart veterans for Book of Honor

Niagara County Clerk Joseph A. Jastrzemski said Niagara County will once again honor Purple Heart veterans by adding their name to county's Book of Honor at a ceremony to be held on Sunday, Aug. 6. The county is asking any Purple Heart veterans or their family members who have not yet come forward to please do so by May 1 in order to be part of this year's ceremony.
Niagara Falls man pleads guilty to gun charge

U.S. Attorney Trini E. Ross announced Lazarus R. Hayes, 33, of Niagara Falls, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge John L. Sinatra Jr. to possession of a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking, which carries a mandatory minimum penalty of five years in prison, a maximum of life, and a $250,000 fine.

Gov. Kathy Hochul on Friday announced the promotion of Denise Donnell - the first woman to command the New York Air National Guard - to the two-star rank of major general. Donnell was the first woman to command one of the New York Air National Guard's five flying wings, and is one of only five women to attain the rank of major general in the New York National Guard.

In one of the last acts in Congress 2022, the U.S. House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved the National Heritage Area Act (S. 1942) by a bipartisan vote of 326-95. Days earlier, the Senate passed the same bill without opposition. President Biden signed the legislation on Jan. 5, 2023.

Niagara Falls Police have arrested a suspect in the homicide that occurred on the morning of Jan. 1 in the 2200 block of LaSalle Avenue. The suspect is charged with one count of murder in the second degree and will be arraigned in Niagara Falls City Court on Tuesday, Jan. 3.

On Dec. 30, at 6:23 p.m., the Niagara County Sheriff's Office communications center received a fire alarm from the Wheatfield Towers Apartment Building. The fire alarm was followed by a water flow alarm from the same location.

The Office of City of Niagara Falls Mayor Robert Restaino announced, "Modern Disposal will be performing regularly scheduled trash pickup for this week, Wednesday, Dec. 28, through Friday, Dec. 30. Those who normally are scheduled to have Monday or Tuesday garbage pickups will be pushed back to next week. There will be no item restrictions for those two days (Jan. 2-3)."

On Sunday morning, the Niagara County Sheriff's Office announced, "Effective immediately the travel ban for Niagara County has been lifted. A travel advisory will remain in place at this time. A travel advisory is also in place for the City of Lockport, City of Niagara Falls and the City of North Tonawanda."

On Friday afternoon, the Niagara County Sheriff's Office announced, "Niagara County has declared a state of emergency due to the severe weather conditions that are impacting travel and safety. Effective 2 p.m., Niagara County will be upgrading the travel advisory to a full travel ban until further notice."

'Transformative' Niagara Falls projects to attract new visitors & development

The Niagara Falls Heritage Gateways project, which is comprised of five public gateway features intended to stimulate reinvestment in Niagara Falls, will move forward. In addition, New York State Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation has approved an agreement authorizing the Aquarium of Niagara to manage operations at the currently closed Niagara Gorge Discovery Center. Construction will now start on transforming the Niagara Gorge Discovery Center into Great Lakes 360 - an "exciting new space for Great Lakes-focused exhibits."
