Early voting continues in Niagara County

Early voting is available to all registered voters in Niagara County for the Nov. 8 general election. Participate from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3, through Sunday, Nov. 6, at the following locations:

Gov. Kathy Hochul and Congressman Brian Higgins on Tuesday announced New York was awarded $500,000 in federal funding to further the state's efforts in combatting targeted violence and domestic terrorism.
Concerts to focus on mental health issues

The Niagara Falls High School and Wilson High School choruses have combined to present two concerts featuring music dealing with mental health issues, with proceeds from basket auctions and 50/50 raffles to benefit the Mental Health Association of Niagara County.
Niagara Falls police seek information on shooting

Monday at approximately 6:40 p.m., the Niagara Falls Police Department responded to the area of Vanderbilt Avenue and DeVeaux Street for a report of shots heard. Upon arrival, officers located a 23-year-old Niagara Falls man with a gunshot wound to his abdomen and his elbow.
State Parks to host information session on extension of crow's nest project

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation will host a public information session regarding the expansion of the crow's nest walkway and viewing platform. The meeting will take place from 5:30-7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 14, in the training room at DeVeaux Woods State Park, 3180 DeVeaux Woods Drive, Niagara Falls. A formal presentation is slated for 6:30 p.m.

'Native American War Heroes' featured at Veterans Day children's program

A Veterans Day program for children ages 7 to 11 will take place at the Niagara History Center from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11. The theme this year will be "Native American War Heroes" and will commemorate the local Tuscarora Heroes who assisted Lewiston residents escape the British and hostile Indian attack in 1813; as well as U.S. Union Army Officer Ely Parker, a Tonawanda Seneca, who penned the surrender terms at Appomattox, ending the Civil War.

It's fall, and influenza (flu) season is here again. The flu is a respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat and lungs. The virus spreads mainly from person to person through droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze or talk. The virus also may spread when people touch something with flu virus on it and then touch their eyes, nose or mouth. Flu can cause severe illness, hospitalization and death. Anyone can get the flu, and serious problems can occur at any age.

Niagara County Legislator David Godfrey said this is the last week for candidates to sign up for several upcoming civil service exams. Those interested in exams for caseworker, clerical II, correction officer and social services worker must submit an application by this Friday, Oct. 28. The exams will be given Dec. 10.

Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper, in partnership with the Town of Niagara, has completed a decade-long project to protect and restore a critical forested wetland site along Cayuga Creek in the Town of Niagara. The protection of an additional 12 acres in partnership with the Buffalo Niagara River Land Trust in September caps off restoration work on the creek and surrounding ecosystem.

Ryan announces funding for public safety in Tonawanda
