Congressman Brian Higgins announced the winners of the annual Congressional Art Competition. The top winner will have their art displayed in the halls to the Capitol Building and will also receive two tickets from Southwest Airlines to attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony to be held in Washington, D.C., at the end of June (alongside young artists from across the country).

The Niagara County Department of Emergency Services is inviting the public to take part in updating the county's hazard mitigation plan (HMP), beginning with an online plan launch meeting at 6 p.m. June 9. Those interested in participating can register at https://tinyurl.com/2aame9b7. The HMP was last updated in 2017.

Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center will now offer a nutrition program in the Summit Orthopaedic Center, located in suite 700 of the Summit Healthplex (6934 Williams Road, Niagara Falls). Starting June 8, outpatient registered dietitian Diana Korzhukova, M.S., R.D., C.D.N., will see patients at the center for nutrition counseling every Wednesday.

The annual Relay For Life of Greater Niagara returns for 2022 with a Luminaria ceremony from 7-10 p.m. Friday, June 3, at Lewiston-Porter High School. It continues Saturday, June 11, with all-day events at Reservoir State Park on Witmer Road in the Town of Niagara.

The Wheatfield Business Association received 11 applicants - 11 outstanding students from schools including Niagara Wheatfield, Starpoint and St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute - for its 2022 scholarships. After consideration of all the entrants, Hunter Hodge and Evan Blatner were named the winners.

At approximately 11:40 a.m. Wednesday, the Niagara Falls Police Department responded to the 1800 block of Michigan Avenue for a report of a deceased person. Upon arrival, officers discovered badly decomposed human remains.

At 5:23 a.m., the Niagara County Sheriff's Office Communications Center received numerous 911 calls reporting a commercial structure fire at the Shawnee Golf Course in the Town of Wheatfield. Responding deputies found the structure to be fully involved on the north end, which was determined to be a maintenance garage for the business.

The New York Power Authority board of trustees approved a low-cost hydropower award to General Motors Components Holdings, a subsidiary of General Motors, that will support nearly 1,450 jobs - 200 newly created - at its plant in Lockport. The Niagara hydropower will support a $137 million investment by the firm that will enable the production of critical components for electric motors at its Western New York location.

Earlier this year, the Niagara County Veterans Service Agency relocated to new office space in the Niagara County Courthouse in Lockport. Now, with more welcoming space and some significant improvements in technology, the VSA is better equipped than ever before to helps veterans with any issues they may have, according to Niagara County Clerk Joseph A. A Memorial Day ceremony will be held at Mount View Cemetery on Upper Mountain Road, across from the Pekin Fire Co., starting at 9:30 a.m. Monday, May 30. The Sanborn Fire Co. Band, plus the color guard and firing squad from the Niagara Falls Air Base, and the Cambria Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts, will march from the Pekin firehall to the cemetery.
