Rivershore Inc., Lewiston's Compass Agency serving people with developmental disabilities, held its fourth annual gala dinner Wednesday at the Niagara Falls Country Club. The event was titled "Celebrating Community Partnerships," and served as an opportunity for Rivershore to pay tribute to its numerous community partners.

The Lewiston Public Library will be hosting a special book signing on Saturday, Sept. 28, at noon, for a new and unique work penned by three local authors. "Have Mercy; a Nursing Memoir," written in a five-year period by Mary Herbst, Maureen Ott and Maureen Weber, chronicles memories of their attendance at the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing (presently Trocaire College in Buffalo) from 1960 to 1963.

The Lewiston-Porter Alumni Association announces four area residents will be inducted into its 2013 class of Distinguished Alumni. The ceremony will take place during Lew-Port Spirit Week, on Thursday, Oct. 10, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., in the high school auditorium on the Creek Road campus. The program is open to the public.

State Sen. George Maziarz has announced Gov. Andrew Cuomo has signed into law a measure (S.1095-A) that expands and renames the Niagara Wine Trail system. The new configuration, which takes effect immediately, extends the trail across all of Orleans County and into Western Monroe County, encompassing more wineries than ever before.

It certainly could be. That's Alan Hastings' plan. The Silo Restaurant proprietor has recently taken over the historic Frontier House. He reopened the parking lot and is working with the Village of Lewiston and local elected leaders to convert the building into a microbrewery, restaurant and inn.

Last spring, I wrote a story in the Sentinel about the Canadian geese invading our area, coming from the south. Also mentioned was about how loads of these migrating birds have taken up permanent residence in some northern climes and there seems to be more and more each year.

The 2013 season came to a close last Saturday night with the annual King of the Hill events sponsored by Investor's Services. Twin $1,000 to win 100-lap mains for the Investor's Services Sportsman and Ki-Po Chevrolet Street Stocks highlighted the weekend. A total of 150 cars participated in the two-day affair.

The fourth annual CardioCraze Wellness Walk of Mount St. Mary's Hospital brought more than 150 walkers to the Village of Lewiston on Saturday. Designed to promote awareness of heart disease and good health, the walkers collected donations and raised more than $10,000 for cardiology initiatives at Mount St. Mary's Hospital.
