RealtyUSA donates to WNY Heroes

Members of the Lewiston branch of RealtyUSA presented a $395 check Tuesday to Chris Kreiger, president and co-founder of WNY Heroes Inc.

The Williamsville-based organization provides direct financial assistance to returning soldiers. This includes support for rent, food and schooling.

Participants in the year's 10 Mile Garage Sale took a more laidback approach this year. Many homes had sofas and chairs outside for patrons to use (and, of course, purchase), some families offered Tim Hortons beverages and one North Fifth Street home even had a food truck, Duke's Lunch Box, serving sandwiches and snacks.

Lewiston GardenFest, sponsored by the Lewiston Garden Club, is back for its ninth year of showcasing the historic Village of Lewiston and the community's love of gardening Saturday, June 21, and Sunday, June 22. A free garden walk highlights gardens of local Lewiston residents.

In the past 37 years, four people have served as mayor in the Village of Lewiston. Three of those people are endorsing a political newcomer who seeks that office in the June 17 election.

Richard Soluri, Bill Geiben and Marilyn Toohey are supporting Jamie Symmonds, who is running for mayor against incumbent Terry Collesano and fellow challenger Jacqueline Lampman.

The Village of Lewiston election is Tuesday, June 17. Residents can vote from noon until 9 p.m. at the Red Brick Municipal Building, 145 N. Fourth St.

The Lewiston Police Department suffered a loss in its K-9 unit Wednesday. "Radar," a tracking, drug recognition and patrol dog, was put down. He had been diagnosed with splenic cancer at Cornell University.

Samantha Tremko lost her mom suddenly when she was just 7 years old.

Her family was just settling down from a family vacation in Florida, making the long drive home to North Tonawanda. After dropping grandparents off at their home, Samantha's mom, Robin, suffered a blood clot to the heart.
